“My name starts with K, but calls me Seven.”

This happened a few years back. It was my first semester. The subject; fardhu ‘ayn.

His introduction begins with

My name starts with K, but calls me Seven.

We were laughing. It’s kind of like a lame joke of introducing a nickname, but his facial expression really kills. The weekly class continues and fills with a lot of fun and laughter, until a day Mr. Seven reveals his background.

You know, I’ve been in prison for 40 days in my hometown, Palestine.

I was taken aback. If only I had known that he was from Palestine I would have treated him for a cup of coffee and learns the first-hand stories about it earlier. But I still glad that he did the sharing; even it was almost the end of semester which is also means the end of his postgraduate study.

The story continues.

So, we had to do  tayammum to perform prayers. For forty days. The water provided is only sufficient for drinking. And after forty days some of us were released.

There was one man, my neighbor, he wasn’t released that day. His father was very old at the time I brought the bad news to him. But we couldn’t do anything. We were almost powerless. This continues about 10 years, until I finished my undergraduate study. He was still imprisoned.

One day, his father gets very sick and he wished to see his son by visiting the prison. Coincidentally, his son was released on the same day without us knowing it. So, both of the father and the son were on their way back to each other, after 10 years of separation, 10 years.

Then, when we were almost close to reach the prison, the father gets very sick. He was shivering as if he was seeing ghost, he breathes heavily with cough and phlegm-like sound, and his muscles are tense. I was holding on to his hands as he was struggling to whisper some words in my ears. But I hear nothing understandable.

In a few moments, he died.

Meanwhile, his son arrived home and learned the hard truth.

When we meet, I was breaking as much as he is. He was in tears. I was in tears too, but in my eyes, he was supposed to cry with the tears of joy. But it’s not.

***

and I never seen Seven again the following semester until now.

Semazen; draft 14 Mac

“Merhaba, selamat datang. Masuklah.

“dia bukan sekadar sufi.

“Lihat posisi kaki mereka.

Cerita pasal kelas. Duduk, dengar, tulis sikit sikit, lepas tu tengok jam. Dengar lagi, tengok kiri kanan, tengok depan, salin, lepas tu tengok jam. Tadi jam tangan, ni tengok jam fon.

Atas meja ada banyak bekas contengan. Kadang kadang lucu bila tengok perbualan nonverbal macam :
meja A: soalan no 4 kau dapat x berapa?
meja B:  x = 2.34321 , dapat tak? pakai rumus ni.
ramai yang dah tak pergi kelas. Kedatangan kalau separuh kelas tu biasa la, dan separuh tu agak bagus sebenarnya. Kisah benar kulliyah kejuruteraan.

Identiti dirahsia.

Found in quotation #1

“Attendance are decreasing by days, maybe because of I didn’t tell you to sign the attendance list. If I start taking attendance after midterm, will it be encouraged for all of you to attend my class?”

“Anyway you don’t have to come at all. I mean, you can choose to come or not to. This is what our kulliyyah has been practicing since last year.”

“You’re now a university student. A student should be able to learn independently. If you don’t want to learn from me, it’s ok, you can learn with someone else, or learn by yourself. You still can take the final exam anyhow.” (Everybody listen enthusiastically)

“Maybe I’ll take the attendance just for my personal record. Say, if the student’s carry mark is low, maybe I’ll consider of adding some mark into it. If he/she has very good record of attending my class, maybe I can give some bonus mark. If I want to.”  (A little relief for everyone)

“But, thing is, if a student had full attendance for the whole classes of the semester, but score very low in his/her quiz or midterm test, I can’t help it. It’s obvious that he/she has very low intelligence.  Attend all classes but never scored high mark.”

(Class laughing, but then everyone suddenly having a whisper of serious thinking, worrying about how their own grade wills be. urgh)

*am I going to pass this? Am I going to pass this? Am I going to pass this!? Argh!!!

At the end, some of us fail; some of us pass the course. Half-half.

I failed.

Found in quotation #2

Situation: class is so full today because he wants to make quiz for the day.
*Quiz carry 10% of assessment. It’s important. other college call them as "test".

“Why is our class is so full today? Did I tell you we’ll have quiz today?  No? Nah... Anyway, I don’t know why would our kulliyyah decided not to bar student who had very bad attendance from taking the final exam.”

“This way, people don’t come to class. The admin is full of intelligence people but they put their brain underneath their knee for deciding so. I don’t know why.”

“They just suddenly felt that you’re an adult now, you can decide what is good for yourself, you know yourself better than anyone else, and you have the choice.”

Normal classes no quiz. All of the students fell for that. The lecturer grin happily. What a trick.

* He’s counting the number of students! Checking if someone signed for more than once. Sigh...

Found in quotation #3

Situation: He suddenly took the attendance list and start counting. He has never done this before.

“Why the attendance signed for more than the number of people who came?”

Everybody is silently still.

“There are about 50 people who signed but just 37 came.”
(A different of 13!)

“13 people have cheated. Why? The absentees are not here but the cheaters are.” (oow man)

“You are allowed to not come to the class, then why cheat, just leave it blank.”

L.o.L everybody were chilled out of their calmness. Cuak ayam masing masing. Anyway, cheating is not good. Lesson for the day.

(But it not nice to see blank/hole on your attendance list. Right? It feels no good. seriously!)

Found in quotation #4

Situation: in a non-engineering subject class.

“Please attend the class; I knew that you’re not being barred if you don’t attend class in your kulliyyah but this kulliyyah, NO!

“You’ll receive a first warning letter for being absent for 2 classes, and so on. Standard procedures. You will be barred from taking your final exam if your attendance is less than 80%.”

Turnout: a lot were absent. Students get used to the system.

______________________________________

That is why engineering students study/work independently. they do not just absent class, they study independently, while some other students depend on lecture.

thanx for reading.

no one can stop him.

"No one can stop him, Wallahi" that was saying I heard last night from a friend (an Arab) to describe Gareth Bale everytime he passed Maicon as if he wasn't there. It sounds absurd, yet I can tell that the best right-back for the last season of UCL, Maicon was pawned. totally.

The way the boy can run and run and run against a right-back who is rated by everybody as the best right-back in the world. What he has done to [Maicon] over the last two games is just unbelievable. -Reknapp.

I was smiling the whole match. Suka gila time ni. Dah la yang lain semua InterMilan punya fans. U all know the feeling right?
Great game ah.

Vuvuzelicious.

please answer the following question.

What is a vuvuzela?

pics credit SuperPerolas.com

Excerpt 1.
A mind-numbing torture device made of cheap, brightly colored plastic. It resembles a horn but its pitch cannot be changed. It is being used during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. I thought I heard an angry swarm of bumblebees, but it was the sound of vuvuzelas playing at the World Cup.
Excerpt 2.
An annoying trumpet-like instrument played by fans, mainly in African countries, in football matches. They may be banned from Fifa for the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.
Fan #1: Did you hear the fans go crazy when South Africa scored the goal yesterday?
Fan #2: No! I had to put my television on mute because of those damn vuvuzelas!

Excerpt 3.
An annoying, long plastic horn blown by African fans (especially South Africans) during football (soccer) matches. Unlike cheering or clapping, vuvuzelas are blown in a non-stop, monotone manner throughout an entire match.

They made the 2010 FIFA World Cup sound like a giant hive of angry bees.

Makanan Kegemaran Saya.
